Top Tips for Cleaning & Disinfecting Your Home

Coronavirus has placed more importance on keeping our homes and spaces we live and work in as clean as possible. With the festive season coming up, you might have more guests, in the form of friends and family, in your house than you have in a while, and so sanitising and cleaning properly becomes essential to preventing anyone getting sick.

We share some top tips on how best to do this.

The first thing you'll need to know is that cleaning and disinfecting are two very different things, and you will want to do both daily if anybody has visited or left your home.

  • Cleaning is about removing contaminants from a surface.

  • Disinfecting is about killing pathogens.

Experts recommend that you clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces in your home at least once a day just to be safe.

Examples of High-Touch Surfaces to Clean and Disinfect Daily:

  • Doorknobs

  • Table surfaces

  • Hard dining chairs (seat, back, and arms)

  • Kitchen counters

  • Bathroom counters

  • Faucets and faucet knobs

  • Toilets (seat and handle)

  • Light switches

  • TV remote controls

  • Game controllers

First Clean, Then Disinfect:

  1. Start by cleaning the surfaces, removing any contaminants, dust, or debris. You can do this by wiping them with soapy water (or a cleaning spray) and a hand towel or your normal cloths used for cleaning your home.

  2. Then apply a surface-appropriate disinfectant. The quickest and easiest way to do this is with disinfecting wipes or disinfectant spray.

Wash Those Hands!

Don't forget to have proper disinfecting hand wash in all the bathrooms and by all kitchen sinks in your home, and encourage anyone in the home to make use of these regularly.
