In fact, the World Health Organization has recognized onion for its ability to help alleviate flu symptoms; for example, coughs, congestion, respiratory infections, and bronchitis. Some traditions have even recommended placing onion slices by the bed at night or simply around the house to prevent the spread of the flu.
The theory was that the raw onion would absorb the germs in the air preventing them from entering the body. However, it should be noted that one of the most common ways of getting influenza is by contact with contaminated surfaces or people. Therefore, remember to wash your hands, especially before eating or scratching your eyes.
